The summer is fast approaching and as the temperature rises so does the number of enquiries about plastic surgery. One of the most asked about cosmetic surgery procedures is liposuction, particular in Marbella in order to attain the perfect beach body.

If you want to finally get rid of those annoyingly stubborn pockets of fat that are standing in the way of achieving a smoother silhouette, liposuction has most likely already appeared on your radar.  It is certainly tempting to think that you can have unsightly fat literally sucked out from your body allowing you to finally smooth out your lumps and bumps.

So, now you have thought about liposuction, what is the next step?

It may seem that we are stating the obvious but…first and foremost you must select the doctor who will perform your cosmetic surgery carefully. Research online, read reviews, check out their website and make an appointment to discuss what you want to achieve.

Listen to the experts

An experienced surgeon will take the time to discuss your requirements, assess your general health and suitability and clearly explain the procedure and the results you can expect.  Not everyone’s skin quality, bone structure or features are suitable to achieve the exact outcome. If your skin doesn’t have enough elasticity, then further skin tightening surgery may be necessary.

Specialists in liposuction

It is crucial to choose a surgeon with experience who specialises in the particular treatment that you wish to undergo.  Marbella based cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Pietro di Mauro, is considered to be a pioneer amongst his peers, as he is the first cosmetic surgeon to offer Lipo Vaser ultrasound liposuction to his patients on the Costa del Sol, Gibraltar and further afield.

What is vaser liposuction?

In laypersons terms, vaser liposuction is a revolutionary new method of ultrasound liposuction that is much easier to perform.  It is a win-win situation; this method allows the surgeon to achieve much greater definition and the patient also benefits from a much shorter recovery time. The procedure is also less painful and because it is more precise the surrounding tissues are not affected, therefore reducing the amount of bruising and swelling. How does vaser liposuction work?

Although there are a number of different methods of performing liposuction, we are usually talking about the traditional method. This method involves inserting a small cannula and sucking out the fat. New methods use both vibrations and ultrasound. Vaser Liposuction is the very latest method. It can be applied to most parts of the body, including arms, stomach, back, thighs, ankles, chin, face etc. Multiple areas can be treated at the same time.

Vaser liposuction uses tumescent fluid (a solution made from saline and lidocaine) to shrink the capillaries and provide local anaesthesia. The ultrasound waves zap the fat changing into liquid prior to extraction, which makes it much easier to remove without affecting the surrounding tissues. The fat is removed via a small incision measuring around 4mm.

How long does a vaser liposuction procedure take?

Vaser liposuction procedures is usually carried out under general anaesthetic and the length of the operation will depend upon the size and number of areas covered. Once the operation is finished, you will usually be required to stay overnight in the hospital, at least for one night.

Are the results of vaser liposuction permanent?

As with all types of liposuction, the results will be immediate as the pockets of fat will be liquified and removed. The fat cannot grow back but the existing fat can expand. The most effective way of maintaining your new smoother silhouette is to maintain your weight. To ensure long-lasting results it is essential to follow a healthy lifestyle, including a nutritional diet and regular exercise regime.

Can anyone undergo vaser liposuction?

Liposuction is perfect for anyone who wishes to sculpt their physique by removing small areas of fat. However, it should never be used as a weight-loss strategy. Your doctor will need to assess your suitability based on your overall health. For example, you need to have elastic skin to allow it to snap back into place after the fat is removed.

You need to have a healthy BMI. It is also important that you don’t smoke, as nicotine restricts blood vessels, increases blood pressure and it also damages collagen and slows down its renewal.  If you drink alcohol, it will be necessary for you to cease for at least six weeks prior to the procedure to allow your skin and body to fully rehydrate and replenish nutrients.

Pregnant, nursing or planning on having children

When pregnant or nursing  your baby, it is not advisable to undertake any elective surgical procedures. Also, if you planning to have children you need to consider that you will most likely gain some weight during your pregnancy which can affect the long-term results of your liposuction surgery. Therefore, careful planning is required. As mentioned earlier, although the fat is removed, the remaining fat can expand and fill out the areas that were treated.
